The only vegetable fat used in the production of all LINDT chocolates is pure cocoa butter. Some fillings of LINDT chocolates contain various vegetable fats, including palm oil. In the production process, Lindt & Sprüngli opts for palm oil from sustainable production in order to minimize harmful effects of palm oil production on the environment and humans.
Palm oil has outstanding melting characteristics, is neutral in taste and has a firm consistency at room temperature, its usage is very widespread today. It is particularly suited to producing creamy fillings and thus offering melt-in-the-mouth indulgence.
Responsible production of palm oil
All over the world, palm oil is used for filled chocolates and cookies, food products such as sandwich spreads or margarine, but also for goods such as shampoo, detergents or soaps. Demand for palm oil is thus growing continuously, and more and more oil palms are being planted. The yield they produce is several times higher than that of other oil plants. This is one reason why oil palms are so attractive for farmers.
Oil palms flourish in tropical countries and are often grown in mono cultures. Because the cultivation of oil palms regularly results in harmful consequences for humans and nature, conventional production of palm oil is increasingly coming under criticism by various NGOs. Those organizations draw attention to the destruction of the rainforest and the issue that indigenous populations as well as animals are being driven from their land to make way for large plantations.
To reduce the drawbacks of palm oil production, Lindt & Sprüngli has been supporting the responsible production of palm oil for many years.
Initiative of the WWF
Palm oil from sustainable production offers an attractive alternative to palm oil produced by conventional means. As an initiative of the WWF, “The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)” was established in 2004. The organization specifically supports projects for palm oil from sustainable production and aims at reducing harmful effects of palm oil production through different certification models. As an active member of the Roundtable since 2008, Lindt & Sprüngli has been committing itself to improved boundary conditions in the production of palm oil. Today Lindt & Sprüngli exclusively uses certified sustainable palm oil according to the RSPO Segregation model “Segregated palm oil” for recipes containing this ingredient.
In the WWF palm oil rating, Lindt & Sprüngli is ranked in the best category. Palm oil from sustainable production ensures that the expectations of Lindt & Sprüngli with regard to outstanding quality and the high ethical standards are met – and that customers can unhesitatingly enjoy all LINDT chocolates, whether filled or unfilled. More information about palm oil sourced by Lindt & Sprüngli is available on the corporate Lindt & Sprüngli website's palm oil section.
